It has been 20 years since Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair accepted their award for Best Kiss at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards, for their iconic lip-lock in the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions. It only seemed fitting for the real-life BFFs to recreate the beloved scene for the 2020 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which honored the "greatest of all time," on Sunday night. Gellar and Blair were given the "Legendary Lip Lock" award, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, kissing anyone outside of your bubble is not recommended. Luckily, the actors figured out a creative approach to lock lips in a very 2020 way. During the awards show, which aired on Dec. 6 on MTV, the women chatted about why their kiss was so monumental that people are still talking about it 20 years later. "I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just for the initial shock value, but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are," Blair explained sitting outside at a table with Gellar.
"It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture," added Gellar. "Also, it was super hot."
"So as a special thanks, we'd like to recreate it," Blair concluded.
As the two leaned in to kiss each other, instead of locking lips, their faces uncomfortably smashed into a piece of plexiglass. Because, well, 2020.
"Stay safe, MTV," Gellar said. "And, 2020: end soon."

At the 2006 ceremony, Gyllenhaal said it was "a big deal" that viewers picked their kiss.
